Rooftop tent marketing has a default vehicle, and it is always an SUV — preferably a large one, preferably muddy. So here is a photograph that breaks the rule on purpose: a white family sedan, parked by a lake at dusk, with a hard shell rooftop tent closed on its roof.
The car is a customer's BYD Qin. The tent is one of our side-opening hard shell rooftop tents. This post is about what changes — and what does not — when the vehicle underneath the tent is the ordinary car already sitting in your driveway.
The sedan objection, answered by a photograph
The usual objection to a sedan is that it is not a "camping car". Look at the first photo again. Closed, the tent is a thin, dark slab that follows the roofline; it does not turn the sedan into something it is not, and it does not ask the car to pretend to be an off-roader. A sedan's job on a camping weekend is mostly the same as an SUV's: drive to the water, park, sleep, drive home. The tent only changes where the bed is.
That is the whole point of a hard shell on a small car. When the tent is closed it behaves like roof luggage: quiet, low, out of the way. When it opens, the car you already own becomes the campsite. No new vehicle, no trailer, no ground tent to pitch in the dark.
The view from inside is the same as anyone else's
The second photograph was taken from the mattress, looking out through the tent window at the trees and the lake beyond. Up there, the badge on the car below stops mattering. The bed is flat, the window frames the same water, and the morning light arrives the same way it would over a vehicle three times the price.
Sedans have one genuine advantage up here that rarely gets mentioned: they sit lower. Climbing in and out of a rooftop tent is easier when the roof starts closer to the ground, and the ladder stands at a friendlier angle. It is a small thing at noon and a real thing at 2 a.m.
The honest list: what to check before you copy this
- Check your roof's dynamic load rating first — and count the rack. The tent's weight rides on the roof while you drive, so the car's own rating is the limit, not the tent's. Your owner's manual has the number; do not guess it.
- Confirm the rack and the tent's mounting fit your roof. Sedans vary more than SUVs in roof shape and rail layout. A proper fit is a measurement, not a hope.
- Measure your total height once, before the first trip. A closed shell adds only a little height, but car parks, barriers and low garages do not round down. Write the number on a card in the glovebox.
- Keep the closed shell for bedding, not for heavy gear. A thin quilt and pillows belong up there by design; tools, water and anything sharp belong in the boot.
Who this kind of setup suits
If you already own a sedan and your weekends are lakes, reservoirs and quiet car parks rather than rock trails, you do not need to buy a different car to start camping. You need a bed that folds flat onto the car you have. That is the customer in these photographs — and the reason the tent in them is closed in the first picture and a bedroom in the second. If you are comparing shapes before you choose, our beginner's buying guide covers the trade-offs, and our side-opening tent on a Compass and a Tiguan shows the same idea on two family SUVs.
The lake did the scenic work in these photographs. Our job was smaller: build a tent thin and light enough that a family sedan can carry it without noticing — and open it into a bedroom that notices the lake.
